Current Tax Rates and Transparency

COM has legislative authority to assess and collect ad valorem taxes on the value of properties within its district. The Galveston Central Appraisal District provides the valuation for properties within the college's taxing district. COM offers several favorable exemptions that reduce a homeowner's tax burden. Homeowners can apply for one or more exemptions with the appraisal district using the appropriate form. The Galveston County Tax Assessor-Collector calculates the tax bills and collects property taxes on behalf of COM.

The tax rate is comprised of two elements, which become the total rate charged to the taxpayers of Galveston County:

  1. Maintenance & Operations (M&O): Funds the daily costs of running the college—faculty, student services, and campus utilities.
  2. Interest & Sinking (I&S): Dedicated exclusively to paying off the debt for campus improvements and new construction approved by voters.
