Associate of Applied Science

AAS
The two-year degree expands on the certificate in one extra semester, giving graduates greater job opportunities from clerical jobs to information technology to management.

Accreditation

The Health Information Management accreditor of College of the Mainland is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for ASSOCIATE degree in HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT has been reaffirmed through 29-30.

How Certificates Stack

Our stackable certificates allow you to learn and add to your educational and professional careers while working toward your associate degree. Complete a certificate along with the AAS degree requirements, and have your associates completed in two years.

Level Two Certificate - Medical Coding

Certificate
Upon completion of the Medical Coding Certificate, students may sit for the Certified Coding Association (CCA) exam sponsored by AHIMA and the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam sponsored by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Associate of Applied Science

AAS
Students who successfully complete the AAS degree are eligible to sit for a national exam through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) to become Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT).
Medical Coding Certificate + 20 credits | 1 semester

After successfully completing the program, you are eligible to sit for the American Health Information Management Association’s national exam to become a registered health information technician (RHIT).

Additional Program Information

Students taking the AAS or Medical Coding Certificate are required to:

  • maintain a “C” (75 percent average in HITT related courses)
  • pass a Criminal Background Check
  • provide documentation of current immunizations such as Tetanus, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, TB Skin Test, and Chicken Pox.
  • pass a drug screen

Students may also be required to:

  • provide proof of completion of Hepatitis B, Influenza and COVID vaccine series
  • wear hospital scrubs and student identification badge
  1. Apply to COM and submit the necessary documents (transcripts, meningitis vaccination if under 22 and proof of Texas residency).
  2. Complete a criminal background check.
  3. Provide documentation of current immunizations such as tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, TB skin test and chicken pox.
  4. Submit necessary documentation including high school or college transcripts, proof of Texas residency and meningitis vaccination records if you are under 22.
  5. If you are a first-time college student, attend a New Student Orientation before registering. Transfer students meet with an advisor before registering.
  6. Register for classes at www.com.edu/register.

To be eligible for an Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Management, students must 

  • complete the prescribed courses listed in this Catalog with an overall grade point average of 2.0 or better
  • pass each HITT related course listed in the prescribed course of study with a grade of “C” (75%) or better
  • meet any individually prescribed behavior or remediation-related requirements

Effective September 1, 2017, HB 1508 amends the Texas Occupations Code Section 53 that requires education providers to notify potential or enrolled students that a criminal history may make them ineligible for an occupational license upon program completion.  Program specific information will be provided in course syllabi.
